“I read your book and I couldn’t put it down, so I stayed up until midnight to finish it,” my husband’s former co-worker told me one night over dinner.
His words are exactly what a writer hopes to hear. Unable to help myself, I smiled and took the bait.
“Did you like the mystery?” I asked.
“Oh yes,” he replied. “It rang true about American industry and I had to find out who the killer was. I couldn’t sleep until I solved the mystery!”
I must have looked confused so he leaned over the table. His expression was serious as he dropped his voice.
“You know, I think I’ve met a couple of characters like that and I’m just hoping that they don’t come after me in real life!”
We shared a good laugh and another glass of wine. Sitting there, we both agreed that good stories make for the best fun.
Are you still looking for good summer read? How about a murder mystery that will twist until the very last page? My new book entitled Poison Root is just the story to kick off your summer.
Want to read a bit more? Here is the opening of Chapter One:
John Runar slapped his hands against the heavy wood and shoved the restroom door as it slammed against the back wall. He uttered a string of obscenities while his angry footsteps echoed across the tile floor.
In determined strides, he moved towards the row of sinks. His fingers quivered in a struggle to control his rage. With a scowl, he heaved his computer bag onto the narrow shelf above the faucets.
He stared at his own glowering reflection in the long rectangular mirror and dropped his arms onto the edge of the porcelain basin. Resentment made his eyes glow like onyx stones. Broad shoulder muscles bulged under his dress shirt as he started to ball his fists.
How had it all gone wrong? His work was supposed to be urgent, to add value. Creating a new product for the company was the first good thing he had done since his time in the Army. One revolutionary cellulose process could change the future for packaging and Delta Paper. Now everything that was truly important was going to be destroyed just because temptation struck. But then, hadn’t he succumbed to temptation plenty in his lifetime?
Corporate America really fueled his contempt for unbridled profits, but he had to be honest with himself. John Runar, you’re no angel yourself, he thought with a shake of his head.
