Fluttering For Fun

There were butterflies everywhere.
At every intersection, the bright colored wings were impossible to ignore. Thanks to their presence, there was no mistaking my location. I had arrived at a special place––the ultimate slice of Americana known as Dollywood.
During a recent trip to the Smokey Mountains, I decided to experience the wonder of Pigeon Forge, Tennessee. With multiple generations in tow, I braved not only the theme and water parks, but all the shopping and restaurants that could be packed into a vacation.
In addition to the family fun and delicious meals, my mountain cabin came with an added surprise. A black bear had learned to make the rounds along our winding road in Sevierville. He was clearly on the hunt for any human trash or discards from the grill. Fortunately, he merely sniffed the perimeter of the property every other day and then went on his merry way.
By the end of the week, I had come to appreciate so many things, especially the beautiful painted butterflies all over town. They really were the perfect symbol for the woman who started it all. Dolly Parton came from humble beginnings and then transformed herself into a musical star. Not content to simply entertain millions of people, she used her money and ambition to change the economy of her community and her state.
As I was leaving town, a final billboard from Dolly Parton summed it all up in the best way possible. “Thanks for visiting and I will always love you!”
What a great message to take home. Thanks Dolly. Hopefully, I can remember to share a little of that love and happiness with others.
